Six Simple Steps to Conservation

Think we’re having a drought? Think again!

Drought is a misnomer. Environmental and climate experts agree: there is no drought; it’s the natural condition of our Southern California region. We must accept that fact, and act accordingly.
.
The days of plentiful, affordable water in Southern California are history. Lacking above average rainfall seasons, our water supply diminishes, and costs will continue to escalate. Strict government regulation of usage is already being seen. Tiered rates and consumption policing are already in effect. Going “green” will no longer be optional.

Short of converting your landscaping project(s) to rockscapes and cactus gardens, here are six ideas that have made a huge difference for our clients:

  1. Convert your existing time clocks into weather based smart controllers.
  2. Convert your above ground sprinklers to drip irrigation.
  3. Utilize artificial turf for all or part of your lawns.
  4. Exchange high water use ground covers for low water use varieties.
  5. Thoroughly mulch planting beds to reduce evaporation of irrigation water.
  6. Systematically monitor all aspects of your existing landscape design and irrigation to correct and/or improve underperforming components.

Many of these techniques can be implemented quickly, and at a low cost, providing immediate cost benefits. New high tech, drought tolerant technologies that qualify for rebate programs are already in the field.

For general contractors, property managers and public facility managers: Implement these six techniques now, and you’ll be on the right side of public policy, as well as the planet.
