Native and California Friendly Plant Care
by Forest Hill
Maintenance
Drought tolerant plants are great on multiple counts. Not only do they save water, but they also require little maintenance. In fact, they cut your installation and maintenance cost down, right from the beginning.
Planting
Leave off the soil amendments. Native plants generally don’t need any amendments at the time of planting, particularly the desert varieties. Additionally, never amend tree holes as the reduction in root hold can cause the tree to blow down in high winds.
Watering
Drought tolerant and California friendly plants use less water than most other plants, including the summer months. If you’re going to use plants with largely different water requirements, it is important to group them together in similar irrigation zones. Under watering plants can cause dehydration, while over watering can cause root disease or drowning. Proper irrigation systems along with a Smart Controller can be very effective in setting the proper water level.
Fertilizer
Fertilizer is only used when a noticeable deficiency is present.
Mulching
Since natives and other drought tolerant plants need some moisture at times, it is a good idea to apply 2-3 inches of mulch (from preferably, recycled wood products).
Pest and Disease Problems
Generally native plants don’t have many pest or disease problems, but you should be on the lookout for things like gophers or rabbit invasions that can cause damage quickly.
Pruning
Most plants in a drought tolerant landscape tolerate pruning in moderation. A high degree of removal of leaves and branches can cause problems, and possibly death in some plants. Pruning for some plants can be done only during certain times of the year. It is best if you only prune a small section of the plant first, and then see how it reacts.
